Vanishing Beauty Of Kalash

Kalash valley Pakistan in Chitral is unique in its cultural beauty.  These valleys are situated in the beautiful mountains of Hindukush.They are rare people and surely an endangered community due to multiple factors. Kalash culture and people show love for all people and each other. Their language is Khowar which is rich in literature and is spoken in most areas of the Chitral but do not have common written form. The music of the valley is rich and mostly in khawar language. ‘

Religion of Kalash people is similar to the primitive Greeks who worshiped gods and goddesses. Many of their gods are animal deities and their idols are erected in the streets. These are mostly horse and goat mouths. Some human figures of wood are also found in some areas.

There are three valleys of Kalash people known as Bombret, Rambor and Barir. Total inhabitants of these valleys are less than 4000. They are are under immense pressure of extinction due to many factors. Most important factors among these is the rising tourism in the area. There is no control over hotel construction. Rich investors are making huge hotel buildings which are not only devastating the beauty of the area but also destroying the business of local small hotel owners. Many companies like PIA and TDCP using kalasha people for their ads without any compensation. Many religious organization are working there to convert these people into their faith. Among these many christian and Muslim missions are active. Lives of Kalash people are really miserable due to these factors. Security threats are recent menace due to rising wave of religious terrorism. Tourists misbehave during their festivals and authorities have no system to protect kalash people. Hotel owners buy fuel wood and other commodities at high rates which are becoming unavailable to the local people. There is a need for immediate attention by the  Government authorities to save this unique community from extinction.

Home Bound Farmers In An Asian Village

Asian Village

Light in the last week of September evening was vibrant and magical, bathing these home bound farmers in gold in an Asian Village. After day long activity in the fields, these farmers return home along with their cattle on the dirt roads with setting sun on their back. They fetch the fodder with them for their cattle for the coming night and start their way back to fields early in the next morning.

Village Girl

This flood effected village girl was standing in the river side waiting for some help in the form of food and medicines. We were on a mission to help the flood effected people in Tremu region in Jhang district Pakistan. After helping her I asked for a shot and she agreed. Her clothes show the devastating effect of flood and her eyes show hope for the future but with a tinge of danger.

Surely that is an amazing picture of a mother horse feeding her colt in the road in Naran Valley Pakistan. In Approaching winter the shepherds, who lead nomadic life, start their journey back to the winter hide outs in the more warmer place. They are having sheep, donkey ,goats and horses in their herds. Normally colt feed when they stay in the evening or morning at the start of the journey. But some time they start feeding on the road while moving to satisfy unbearable hunger.

Life of Shepherds are tough but full of romance. They are true travelers, semi nomadic and visit unknown mysterious valleys. Shepherds have lot stories of unseen , unheard destinations. At night they live in shepherds huts made by them for the season. A shepherd is a brave man but still they are having dogs to protect their herd. They start their journey early in the April from the warm areas and continue to travel step by step to the pasture lands at high altitude in mountains of North Pakistan. They starts their journey back in the early September. Life of shepherds remain busy through out the year.

Shepherds Returning Home

These shepherds starts their journey early in the spring towards hilly areas having green meadows and vast pasture lands.They starts their journey from the plains and continue  to travel till the end of august. They start their return back to their houses in the more warmer places at the end of August and reached in plains in November. When you visit hill station like Naran Valley in the first week of September, you encounter many herds of sheep,horses and donkeys. Shepherds are simple and kind heart people and very hospitable. Most of the time they offer butter, cheese and yogurt to the visitors for no cost.

Jalkhad valley is in the Naran area in Pakistan and have streams and nullahs running through lush green grasslands. These people are extremely hospitable and friendly. They offer cheese and curd to the tourist in the valley. Shepherds are semi nomadic and cosmopolitan citizens.
