Wall Painting Tradition In Village Houses Of Subcontinent

Artistic arrangements of the the farmer women

Wall art tradition is centuries old in most part of India and Pakistan. Use of colors and designs are different than that of African countries. Each area and tribe have its own way of decorating their house wallas. Some woman just make a mud plaster with different strokes. Many use home made colors and mix these with lime to make hues of their choice. Green and red colors are used along with yellow and blue. Color combinations and choice of shades is extremely natural and artistic. Most population in remote villages is illiterate and uneducated but surprisingly these areas are rich in cultural traditions. Wall paintings are now a rare phenomenon in more developed areas as people prefer to use glazed tiles and permanent paints. But in areas along the river Ravi have many villages where one can still witness this art specially in houses where a marriage ceremony is going to happen. I have visited these houses many times with my students and always found new color shades and designs. Another very important thing to note is that they people have very simple arrangement of house hold articles like pitchers for water and other utensils. Every article is artistically arranged.
