A Camel Cart in the Desert Thal

Modes of communication are still primitive in many parts of the Thal desert Pakistan. People of Thal are using camel cart to transport different agriculture products from farm to market. This cart is also used as family car by covering the cart with some sheet of cloth.

Camel Dance or dancing camels is a rare scene in most part of the earth now. Subcontinent Pakistan and India is a land of diverse culture. Almost all regions have their unique traditions. Punjab province of both side i.e Eastern and West Punjab is rich in this regard. Many folk festivals celebrated there with lot of cultural activity. Camel Dance is one of these. This art needs lot of training to the animals. It is fading now as new generation do not have time and skill to train these beasts.

Dancing Light Photography

Photography is a painting with light. Light make the images. It is very tough to tell what is good and what is bad light but it is a learning during the process. It is experience that make you able to understand how light will behave on sensor of the camera. Some time light looks very nice but gave very dull results and some time a dull light imprints amazing images on the sensor. So the temperature of the light is also very important. Here are some examples of dancing light photography which is the result of my last fifteen year experience.

Macro World And Light

Spider webs are tough to shoot in even light. to pop up web you need a dramatic, vibrant and warm light . web must be back lit to be exposed with sharp details.

Dancing Light At water Bodies

Rivers, lakes and ponds shimmer in the evening and morning light and lure the viewer in general and photographers in particular to shoot them.

Dancing Light At Deserts

Deserts are marvel of nature and a paradise for nature and landscape photographers. When the golden evening light hit with the ripples of sand it bounce up and create an amazing phenomenon in which light looks dancing on the flour of Desert.

Landscape photography without good light is impossible. Winter evenings and mornings make the perfect environment for shooting landscapes. Here are some examples of shooting landscape with and without life.

Fog is considered as bad weather by most of the people and even photographers consider it as gray and dull and non conducive for shooting. But for me it is all a different story. I love to shoot in the fog and when ever I see fog in the morning through my room window I just jump out of my warm bed and go out for shooting even in sever cold. Shooting in fog and mist is a bit tricky but results are mystic, moody and creative pictures. Here are some important points to keep in mind while shooting in fog:

1) Exposure-  Always shoot one stop over.

Fog looks dull but more reflective and most of the time fool your camera sensor to underexpose. If you shoot at normal program mode then you will end up with dull under exposed pictures. Set manual exposure on your camera and always shoot one stop over for more  dramatic pictures.Bracketing by 1/2 and 1 stop can also work and is more safe. Do not use flash light and shoot in natural light. Flash light just act like a head light in dark and will ruin the overall dreamy effect.

2) Composition –   Keep an Interesting Subject in The foreground

An interesting and strong subject in the foreground will lead the viewer in fading distance and will create a feeling of mystery and illusion. Picture of just fog without any interesting subjects in the foreground are considered worthless.

3) Using Street Lights and vantage point

In urban areas sometime street light can create dramatic effect but that depends upon the thickness and temperature of the fog. A subject emerging out from the fog with lights on back can be a stunning image.Your vantage point is more important, at what angle you are shooting. Head on shots and with angular light with streaks of light gave fine images.  Another important point is that fog is like flowing water and continuously remain in motion. It flows in bumps and lumps so you have to be very clever and selective in shooting.

4) Choice Of Lenses while shooting in fog

My personal choice is medium tele which can produce dramatic effect by moderate compressing effect. But wide angle can also be very useful and creative as you can make your foreground subject more prominent and strong. A long tele may work excellently for a patch of fog on a hill top illuminated by back light with. So choice of lens is very much personal and it depends on your creative ability and choice of situation you exploit. Filters mostly not recommended for fog and may ruin the original effect.

5-Watch out in fog

Shooting in fog is like shooting in rain. So you have to be very careful about your camera. Always keep lens cloth with you and wipe out the mist from your lens front. Take precautionary measure to save your gear to become damp and short circuiting. keep in a small electric air blower to blow out fog around the camera.Do not change lens in fog otherwise it may cause irreparable damage to your gear.

Mastering Landscape Photography

Most of the time in landscape photography horizontal shot is preferred, that is why horizontal format is known as landscape format. But this is not the rule.

Shooting Vertical

Considering elements in the scene, it is most of the time photographer’s personal choice whether to go for the horizontal or vertical. Flowing water streams or winding roads and high peaks often incite an artist to shoot vertically.

Shoot In Both Format

It is wiser to use both formats in landscape photography especially when you are living in digital era where there is no running cost for shooting lots of frames. Professionals mostly did that even when they were using costly film media. Most of the time magazine covers need vertical shots and even books accommodate vertical shots with more ease. You can tilt your camera in 90 degree by your tripod head of or more professionally you can by an L-plate which can be used by quick release bracket on your tripod. Just release the camera and change it from horizontal to vertical.

Shooting Horizontal In Landscape Photography

Horizontal choice is very much natural as our eyes see the world horizontally. We are using horizontal pictures as wallpapers on computer screens and also on billboards. For hanging pictures of the landscape photography on the wall, horizontal is the norm. Scenes with vastness and depth are extremely suitable for horizontal shorting. For example a vast plain with lot of flowers in the foreground and snow-capped peaks in the background makes perfect choice for horizontal shooting.

  Squire landscapes

In very rare conditions squire landscape are also look attractive but this is an extraordinary situation and must tried when you think the elements in the scene demand that.

Conclusion

      Finally it is the artist who can better decide what to choose. Still it is important to mention that in vertical format scenes with vertical leading lines look more deep and creating a feeling of mystery especially at dusk and dawn. On the other hand a horizontal choice can give a sense of space and vastness in the landscape photography.
