River Ravi one a gushing and flushing river is now dying. Flowing through the mountains and plains of India and Pakistan. River Ravi originated from the Himalayan mountains and many small rivers join it on the way. But this river is dying specially on Pakistan side as its water right is with India according to Indus Water Treaty. Fishing is almost diminishing in this river and fishermen have to travel and row long distances in search of fish. This is a picture from the river stretch near Sahiwal city in Punjab Pakistan.

Art of Fishing

Life on the rivers in Asia specially in the subcontinent (India and Pakistan ) is still have some thousands of years old glimpses. Fishermen are still using ancient ways of fishing by using cast net made by themselves. The only change is the use of weight balls which are now of metal rather than terracotta as in ancient days. They are expert in their job and casting a net in the river is surely an art. They have that art runs in their blood as their forefathers are doing that work from centuries.

Children playing in the water and woman folk preparing meal on wood fire with smoke wafting out is enough to ignite the creativity of a documentary photographer. Colorful boats parked on the river bank are popular subject for both in landscape and documentary photography. A November evening light help me to get this shot where life is in its simple but beautiful form. Fisherman are simple and hospitable. Day work of a fisherman starts very early in the morning before the sun rise. He has to see his nets for the night catch and also cast some nets to get more and more catch. With the rising sun they bring that catch to the bank of the river where a small market is established and middle man purchased the fish. Then after breakfast fisherman again goes back to the river and establish nets for the next night. He returns home in the evening with setting sun.
